Years ago I got plucked out of nowhere for a brand new role. I hadn't even applied - which my brain immediately decided meant I didn't deserve it. I walked into a team of very strong, very experienced men, and from the first meeting they cut me down and ate me alive. I started dreading being on screen. I stopped speaking up. I was convinced I'd been found out.
So I did what so many of us do. I went and fixed the outside. I hired a deportment coach - of all things - because surely if I showed up better and looked the part, I'd feel the part. Spoiler: I did not. Looking more polished doesn't touch an inner critic that's certain you're a fraud.
The real work was on the inside. I had to learn that I was as good as anyone in that room. And somewhere in there a wise friend told me there was more than one way to skin a cat - which was her way of telling me to stop trying to lead like the men around me. My way of leading wasn't something to fix. It was actually the better way. I just hadn't backed it yet.
I eventually ended up in a General Manager role more senior than anyone who'd sat in that room. But it took me years, and I worked it out the long way - on my own, and with my own coaches, one hard-won lesson at a time.
